Pollen allergens

grains are allergenic if their allergenic entities are water soluble and their molecular size are within fairly well defined limits. A lower limit of a few thousand Daltons, and an upper limit of close to 100.000 daltons, because otherwise the permeation through the mucosal barrier is too low. The allergenic entities in pollens must cross an aqueous barrier, first to reach the immune competent cells and stimulate the immune system to produce IgE antibodies, and next to reach sensitized mast cells.
