Classes and subclasses of Antibodies

Antibodies, according to their structural similarities are distinguished into different classes and subclasses depending on the nature of their heavy chains. Each class is characterized by different function. Five different classes of immunoglobulin can be demonstrated in humans: IgG, IgM, IgA, IgD and IgE. some of these are further divided into subclasses. The number of subclasses in each class varies between different species, e.g. IgG is subdivided in four subclasses in humans: IgG1-IgG4.
