Their effectiveness in many diseases is based primarily on the competitive blockade of the β-adrenergic receptors within the autonomic nervous system that occurs with all these drugs. Included in this group of compounds are propranolol, metoprolol, nadolol, atenolol, timolol, acebutolol, pindolol, esmolol, and labetol. (See Beta blockers).
