The benzoates and their derivatives, like parabens, are frequently used as preservatives. Their role in inducing pseudoallergic reactions was first mentioned in 1967. Provocation tests with benzoates  were performed in single blind and in double-blind studies with positive responses in about 2% of asthmatic patients. (See additives, additives, drug).
