Antigen presenting cells (APCs)

The function of antigen presentation and processing is induced by the cells of the mononuclear phagocyte system (marginal zone macrophages, folicular dendritic cells, monocytes/macrophages, Langerhans cells), which are located near portals of entry to the body.

They are responsible for endocytosis of foreign matter entering via these routes. They are activated to become antigen presenting cells, bearing class II MHC receptors which enable interaction with T-lymphocytes. The T cell then produces cytokines which, in addition to other functions, serve to activate resting macrophages.
