Antigen
A substance recognized by the immune system as being foreign to the body. It induces the formation of antibody when it enters the body, eliciting an immune response.
An antigen can be a virus, a bacterium, a fungus, or a parasite, or even a portion or product of one of these organisms. Cells or tissues from another individual, except an identical twin whose cells carry identical self-markers, also act as antigens. (See Allergen).
