Λεξικό .. Anti-idiotypic antibodies

The set of determinants (singularly called idiotypes) bestowing antigenicity to the combining site (paratope) of each antibody are termed idiotypical and are expressed on the hypervariable regions of immunoglobulins. Their complementary antibodies are the anti-idiotypic antibodies (anti-Id). Idiotypes are therefore antigenic determinants present on B-cell antigen receptors (membrane Ig), but also on T-cells (particularly on T-suppressors) idiotypes are present not only on the membrane structures, but also on the secretion products (Serum Ig, T-cell specific suppressor factors, etc.). Anti-idiotypic monoclonal antibodies (mAb) have been evaluated for actively induced immunotherapy with encouraging results [1]. Anti-idiotypic antibodies, which imitate a tumor-associated antigen by their variable region, offer an elegant method for the induction of a specific immune response, when used as a surrogate antigen for immunization.
