Alactasia (Lactase deficiency)
Deficiency of intestinal lactase, the enzyme required for lactose digestion, can result in symptoms of gastrointestinal malabsorption, or lactose intolerance [1]. The fermentation of unabsorbed food residues can lead to the formation of propionic acid in the colon which together with the release bloating, colic nausea and intestinal hurry (irritable bowel syndrome). Symptoms may be controlled eliminating milk and wheat products [2]
