Dictionary of Allergies .. Azelastine

Azelastine is an antiallergic medication with antihistaminic activity that inhibits leukotriene C3 and C4, serotonin, bradykinin, and passive cutaneous anaphylaxis and causes bronchodilatation. These data indicate that doses of 4mg and 6mg twice each day are safe and effective in the treatment of chronic asthma in adults.

Azelastine is of potential value in the treatment of allergic rhinitis where specific H1 receptor antagonists alone give incomplete symptom control. Azelastine has been given to sufferers from  vasomotor rhinitis and the best results were a decrease in nasal obstruction and mucosal edema. This therapeutic benefit of azelastine nasal spray in vasomotor rhinitis can be due to its anti-inflammatory and decongestive properties.
