Humoral or cell-mediated immune response misdirected against the body's own tissue.
During an autoimmune response, the body sees itself as foreign. Idiopathic thrombocytopenic purpura (ITP) is an autoimmune disorder. A number of other diaseses, such as rheumatoid arhtritis and diabetes mellitus type I, may have an autoimmune etiology.
