Dictionary of Allergies .. Aspergilloma (fungus ball)

A tumor like granulomatous mass formed by colonization of the mould Aspergillus in a bronchus or lungs. Aspergilloma usually affects non-atopics who develop a fungal ball in the lungs, have chronic cough and can be misdiagnosed as having  tuberculosis. (See Aspergillus fumigatus). The treatment for pulmonary aspergilloma remains challenging and often needs lifelong treatment to minimize fatal haemoptysis, which can occur in up to 25%, and progression to secondary invasive aspergillosis.
