Dictionary of Allergies .. Acetylcholinesterase

Acetylcholinesterase

The released acetylcholine (Ach) is degraded rapidly by acetylcholinestrase through hydrolyzation to acetate and choline within the central nervous system and at the peripheral neuroeffector junctions, there by limiting the duration of the neurotransmitter effect. Inhibition of acetylcholinesterase with edrophonium or organophosphates will potentiate the effect of the released Ach.
