Dictionary of Allergies .. Acetylcholine

Parasympathetic neurotransmitter acting on the muscarinic receptor. It is rapidly inactivated by cholinesterase. Acetylcholine is the chemical transmitter in the vagus nerve which is responsible for the bronchial irritability reflex.

When a solution of acetylcholine is made into a vapour and inhaled, it causes bronchial muscle to contract. Most tests for assessing this have employed a compound closely related to acetylcholine, namely methacoline.
