Membrane biochemical events which take place following antigen accumulation at the mast cell are termed activation. When adjacent cell based IgE molecules are cross linked by the specific antigen activation of the target cell occurs. As a result of this binding, there is confluence of the network of IgE molecules on the cell surface, which initiates the necessary membrane signal for mast cell secretion of mediators.

This is likely accomplished by means of an IgE induced membrane signal, which activates a membrane based protease, one of the parts of a multi component system, which forms the IgE receptor. By this mechanism, the formation and release of inflammatory mediators from the mast cell is regulated activation.
